JR.com has the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens for $89 + $4 shipping = $93 shipped. This is a best-value prime lens for your Canon SLR that is both very fast and very sharp. It is often referred to as the 'nifty fifty'.
I have this exact lens. The build quality is cheap with plastic mounts. AF is slow and noisy. However, the picture quality is excellent considering this lens is less than $100. I use this as my primary lens indoor. I think every canon user should have this lens because it's so cheap!
It's a shame since the original version of this lens has a metal mount and is of excellent quality, though the AF motor for both is very slow and noisy. Still a good one to have, but I prefer the 50mm f2.5 macro.
Spend the money on the more expensive version. We went through 2 of these cheapies before forking over for the metal one. They are very cheap construction and if you ever plan on traveling with the camera then you are asking for trouble. Both times we sent the lens back to canon and was denied warranty service saying it was not a manufacturing defect. Neither time was there an incident we recall that would have caused the damage. The front glass just fell out, and inside a little plastic clip had broke.
Just bought this lens on ebay for $90 (used). This is a great lens, the picture quality is excellent. While the older version is more heavy duty, the optics are exactly the same. great lens for shallow depth of field and low light. It is now my primary lens. Also with f1.8 it lets more light in and allows for better low light pictures and faster shutter times.
This is a great lens. Image quality is superb. Build quality is cheap but I don't bang my lens around, so I'm not worried. However, I bought it for around... $70, I think, from Amazon a couple of years back.

I also have the older version and is my primary lens on my 20D.

It's obviously a better investment than real estate, baconbits.
the problem with this lens is that with my camera's crop factor, this is almost a telephoto
