Ritz Camera has the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens for $107 - $10 off with Google Checkout [Exp 2/10] = $97 with free shipping. This is a best-value prime lens for your Canon SLR that is both very fast and very sharp. It is often referred to as the 'nifty fifty'.

I completely agree that from a image quality standpoint, this is the best lens for the price. No USM motor so it's a little slower and louder when focusing.

If you were lucky you could get one for ~80 last spring-summer but I guess not anymore. All lens prices went up and b 10$ less is hardly worth waiting (but that depends...).

I would also recommend to click on USED lenses at Amazon and see if they have what you want from WAREHOUSE vendor. After a lot of hesitation I jumped on Pentax 50-135mm/F2.8 for the extremely low price that I don't dare to mention. It was listed as good condition, came in a pristine condition in a slightly scratched outside sealed box that apparently had never been even opened! A pleasant surprise and total steal. Doesn't mean the next one will be as good as this but worth trying considering hassle-free Amazon return policy

This lens is not very useful for the APS sized sensor (equiv to 80mm). The image looks very soft at f=1.8
I brought the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 USD and never look back.

#4: Use it as a portrait lens on the smaller sensors. Works great for that purpose. And it's tack sharp compared to your zoom and pretty much any other zoom. This lens is it. Got mine years ago for $69 which was the going rate at the time.

This is definitely a good lens at the price.
The 17-85 is a good lens at about $1000, but can you do f/1.8? LOL.
My primary lens is the 24-70L and I still use this lens very much often when I need to pack light and it is extremely useful when taking pics of food in dimly lit restaurants.

No matter how you put it, this lens is fantastic for its price-point. Unless you're a professional photographer who can afford faster lenses, there shouldn't be a reason not to get this sharp lens.
