If you are buying this for the 1080p feature ...

From DP: The 500D offers true HD video capture at 1920 x 1080 pixels (1080P) at 20 frames per second or 1280 x 720 pixels (720P) at 30 frames per second. The built-in internal microphone captures mono audio. The audio quality is not fantastic and unfortunately there is no socket for an external microphone. There is a small built-in speaker for video playback in-camera.

This interests me greatly. I don't know the camera personally but I have an artist friend that has it, and praises it highly.

20 fps video seems to be pretty useless unless filming still nature.

If you are after video then just get a video camera. These camera's are built for stills.

20 fps is weak, also I don't think the autofocus and auto white banance works when recording video...

The video is a gimmick. I'd rather get the XSi body and save the cash for a good lens. Canon has much better glass than this kit lens. The 70-200 f4L is sweet (or better, the f2.8L if you have the cash), or for a little over $100 the 50mm EF f1.8-II is a steal.
