Canon has the refurbished Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP 3.0" Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens for $640 - 20% off with coupon code 20SLR612 [Exp 6/30] = $512 with free shipping.
18MP CMOS (APS-C), Full HD video, rotating 3" LCD, live view
9-Point AF, ISO 100-12800, 3.7 shots/sec, SD/SDHC/SDXC
That really depends. There were some articles a few weeks ago describing how thorough and complete the refurb process is for Apple products, with a lot of important parts just routinely replaced. It really is a case by case thing. How to find out which case it is though - bit of a problem. One (optimistic) way of looking at it is they hen-pecked the thing. Alternatively, "looks good to me . Next ."
I bought one of these just now, so we'll see. The shipping was actually $16 - didn't seem to be any way around that, and there was a tax of $45 here in California. Kind of made me pause, but it's still a pretty good deal, after checking on Ebay, whatever.
* * I made a report back later - it should show up on the second page in this thread.
Kbarb, let me know how it goes. I'm in California as well. The tax usually kills these deals for me. I'm looking to get a DSLR to take some photos of my newborn.
Bought many many electronic items refurbished, never had a problem. $512 for this camera sounds great....$560 with tax and shipping costs...not so great...Ben needs to correct the listing information, unless there is a way to trigger free shipping that I'm not aware of.
hey kbarb -- there's a big red banner at the top of canon's page that says "free shipping offer - click for details" which, when clicked, informs that code "june612" (which can be stacked) gives free shipping, so you could have saved the $16

Damn, I missed that. I was surfing around too much to see If there was a better price, and trying to lock this one in before the code got used up. But the tax was the killer add-on - kept trying to think of an out of state friend that could buy it for me. I'm still ok with the price, just not as ok.
Ended up using the same coupon code for the Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP. Not quite as good as the T3i, but with tax it ended up being about $100 less than the T3i...so still a good deal IMO...thanks for pointing out the red banner joshields...I missed in initially too.
I got the thing a few weeks ago, but didn't have time to use it until a backpacking trip in the Sierras last week.
It looked like new and behaved like new - I haven't turned up any problems yet. It came with all the accessories and manuals. I'm really pretty happy with it. I thought I might be buying too cheap a dslr, but it's pretty easy to take photos with - much easier than my Canon point and shoot. Looking through the lens gets you a much higher ratio of good pics to bad. And it's light too - you might think that means cheap, but it's much better for backpacking, carrying it with a hand strap while hiking.
Anyway, mostly I use AV, Manual and movie modes, then viewing through the LCD, and so far the refurb route hasn't turned up anything wrong.
Not bad of a deal. Sell that lens for $50 and you're looking at a t3i body for $470. Too bad i'm in financial lockdown by the wife
Refurbs are bad. Too expensive to fail.
