Both serve a purpose.. At $316 the XS is a great deal, add the 50mm prime for ~$100 and you can have a pretty decent package for just over $400.. I picked up two of these last year at this same price point, both had less then 100 shutter actuations. No video mode but seriously if you are buying a DSLR why do you need a video mode? Carry a point and shoot for HD video if you must. Even with a class 4 card and you can take pics at the 3FPS until the card is full.. 10MP is plenty. Most companies are seeing that anything more then this is not really needed unless you are shooting pics for super high quality publishing or enlarging o poster size.
The G12 is more then a simple point and shoot as it has a few more features then the XS and thats why theres a price difference.
I have a DSLR but carry a smaller camera in my bag as well.. Theres clear advantages of both and no reason not to have both handy..
The XS really gets the job done, yes its discontinued and has been replaced by the Txx series but it does what it should.. Takes quality pictures.
Now days DSLR price is so low really close to point & shoot camera. A canon G12 point& shoot camera cost $455- even higher than this DSLR...
Not sure theres a point there..
