I have an XTi and love it, but see advantages going to XSi...so am moving up. As for XTi being dead, probably a reality after release of the new XS announced for next month. No reason to keep the XTi around after that one is released.

The first entry-level camera from Canon or Nikon with a serious CMOS sensor and countless other, mid-range features.

Too bad Nikon still doesn't take entry-level seriously like Canon.

Seems like a good deal for under $700. DSLR's have really come down in the last few years for the average consumer. It makes the regular lenses go up in price! Booooo!!!

#12, the XS is a little bit more stripped down version of the XSi but slightly better than the XTi. It'll be less than the XSi but I don't know if the savings are worth it. Less megapixels (10 vs 12), less AF (7 vs 10), smaller LCD (2.5 vs 3). Spend the extra $100 on the XSi, you won't regret it.

This page highlights the main differences

FOOLS buy cameras online from Brooklyn, New York.
Trusted NY stores include B&H & Adorama.

Check extensive camera reviews at dpreview.com.

Canon & Nikon make good machines, but there are some differences. Explore whether you want full frame (Canon) or cropped frame (Nikon); and how important the LCD screen is to you. See kenrockwell.com for practical comments.

Nikon uses a cropped sensor - smaller photowells (generally), but smaller, less expensive lenses; Canon's full frame sensors reveal glass imperfections and require better, more expensive lenses -- YMMV. Nikon's LCDs tend to be far superior (at least up to 6 months ago while I was keeping track).

As for 50 frames per second -- do you shoot that? Do you need a Maserati that does 185? Or are those wasted dollars that could be in your IRA?

#14, don't offer advice if you have no idea what the burp you're talking about.

Canon and Nikon both make "full frame" (35mm) sensors, as well as cropped frame sensors. This Canon is a cropped frame sensor, as are all the inexpensive consumer cameras in both brands. There are ONLY two Canon cameras that have full frame sensors, the ludicrously expensive 1Ds series and the Canon 5D. Nikon's D3 and D700 both have full frame sensors.

As a matter of fact, Canon's cropped sensors are MORE cropped than Nikon's cropped sensors - though only marginally so.

The lenses for cropped frames are actually, contrary to popular belief, not much smaller or less expensive, and the majority of both company's lens lineups are not of the cropped-sensor specific variety.

And Ken Rockwell is a pompous douchebag whose advice should not be taken seriously. Much of what he reviews is without using it first, many of his other reviews are seat-of-the-pants with nothing to back them up, and what little remains is a stubborn refusal to accept that sometimes more expensive equipment is more suited to certain situations.

Pentax actually has some significantly smaller lenses for its 1.53x cropped, APS-C sized sensor.
I know Tokina makes a few of the Pentax lenses for other cameras (without the Pentax mechanics and coating).
