I got this about a couple months ago after quite a bit of research. It basically comes down to this and the Sony, and I didn't want to be stuck with Sony's proprietary crap.

I chose mini-dv over the hard drive versions because I don't want to be somewhere and run out of HD space. With tape you can pop another one in, and I can deal with the transfer issues, have a fast new computer with over 1TB of space available.

EDIT: Yes, 830 is a very good price, I paid close to 1k

This is highly rated and won the HD Video Camera shootout that I read. The only criticism was that it felt 'cheaper' than the other cameras. Video quality, color, contrast, etc. were all best in class and it is actually cheaper than all of the other models in the test. It was listed at $1099 in the test and the Sony that came in 2nd was $1399

I now see why these are coming down in price, the HG10 is out.

Visit http://www.camcorderinfo.com for really good in-depth reviews of camcorders, including the HV20

Can someone recomend a good software to bring the video into the PC or do editing etc? One thing I don't understand about Mini-DV's or just video camaeras in general is how come a 2 hr Hollywood movie fits into a DVD but a 30 min home video takes up 20Gigs or more of disk space?
      Maybe someone can enlightend me.

      Thanks

i have this camera, very nice in picture quality... if you can wait for the HG10, then do so, but if must have now, buy this one

as for the software, check this forum out, lots of tips/tricks/etc.

#7, you are transferring the raw uncompressed video to your computer. You have to convert the raw video to the compressed MPEG2 format which is the DVD standard.
