is this a good printer? Is it a black hole for ink?

It gets some pretty good reviews on Amazon, but it only has 1 black ink cartridge and 1 multi-color cartridge so if you run out of one color it's time to buy a new cartridge. If you just need a printer the Pixma IP2600 is only $30 at Walmart. After having had several expensive photo quality printers fail after only using the original ink I'll stick with the cheap printers and just throw them away when the ink runs out.

I've got an HP that has multiple cartridges, but it's always complaining they've expired (especially if I use non-HP ones). Do Canon's have similar annoying sw associated with them?

I've contined to use a HP all in one and found that the black is refillable (still using my first cartridge/head or second after thousands of pages) but the at least on HP, the color cartridges are not worth refilling, as it's tricky to get the capillary action going in the 3 inks just right. If you're considering a printer and plan to do a lot of black ink printing, look into refilling.
