i've been looking for a $100 compact camera for a while (as my s2 is too large to take everywhere), but was put off from the a590 because of people's complaints about the overly long flash recharge time.

TheBS mentioned dpreview's recent budget compact camera comparison (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/q408budgetgroup/page15.asp) in another deal, which again confirmed that the a590 is an otherwise great camera except for the flash recycle time.

based on that review, i'm now looking for a deal on the panasonic lz8, but everybody selling it for near $100 is sold out. i'm not concerned about buying it before christmas, so hopefully after the holidays it'll be restocked and maybe cheaper.

the sony w120 was the other dpreview recommended camera, but it's uses sony's proprietary memory stick, proprietary batteries, and is closer to $120.

I have this camera. It's not the smallest, but in my opinion it performs better than the most compact cameras, and it's still pretty small.

#3, I'm under the impression that if you use rechargeable AAs in the camera, the flash recharge time goes down. I don't speak from experience with this camera though.

    Amazing deal, great camera.

I have the immediate precursor, the A570IS. Sharp lens, easy to hold, uses AA form factor so you can find cells anywhere in the world. Yes, use rechargeables like Sony's "Enerloop" cells to get lots of shots and a shorter recharge time.

I think Canon's image stabilization system is the best in the business. You can shoot 2-3 shutter speeds slower for equivalent results.

One thing hardly ever mentioned about the A series is that there is alternative firmware out there, giving the cameras a host of new features.

    Overall, a great camera.
