The wide-angle zoom is key, and perfect for what mos people usually use a P+S for. After owning this camera, I probably wouldn't buy a P+S without a wide-angle zoom.

I just got mine from Amazon for $297. The LCD is really nice and big and the wide angle lens is sweet (main reason why I chose this over the 850). It's a sharp looking camera, but I've already got fingerprints all over it. The scene modes do a good job of automatically producing nice photos. The USB access is protected by a pretty flimsy cover.

Overall, I feel like I got a great camera.

Bought the 750 for my girlfriend last year and have been eyeing this ever since. On whatchamakallit's advice I'll see how the next gen looks and prices in comparison. The 750/870 line is a sharp little design, with a nice 3" screen, and worth the money in my opinion.

This is a great camera... however for some reason, it REFUSES to go on sale!!!

      It's always about $299!? It's annoying...

If you ever see it for less, jump on it.

The SD800 can still be had from Beach Camera for $239 shipped.

The SD870 is based on the SD800 with these improvements: "improved Face Detection AF and red-eye reduction in playback mode, and Auto ISO shift ... a larger screen and just under one million extra pixels" - dpreview.

If these features are worth the extra $53 to you then go for the SD870. I went with the SD800 and had no prob with the Beach.

klingsor - definetly like this camera, i want to upgrade from the 750, but i am just going to wait... the 870 has been floating around the 290 price for the last couple of months! I want to see if it drops some more.

Got mine just a week ago from Amazon along with the accessory kit which gives you an extra battery and camera case for ~$40 (Their price fluctuate every day).
I got it mainly for the battery (I prefer OEM battery, and alone will cost $30) The leather case is nice but it is too tight and it is a hassle to take the camera out of the case(not good for quick candid shots).

Camera itself is top quality (also made in Japan, if that matters to you). Startup and focus and shutter lag are as fast as my Rebal XT.

Focusing is dead accurate even under dim light condition, and with Image stabilizer I have yet to produce a blurry picture under reasonable lighting condition.

I bought this camera to replace my aging Sony W1, and so far I am extremely please with the upgrade.

I gave my SD800 to my brother and picked up the 870 some months back and haven't regretted it. The bigger screen and quick access to Playback button and mappable movie-record button made a nice difference in quick/candid usability for me.

One nit about ALL the newer Canon pocket cameras is that they've moved the slow-sync flash option off of the flash button and into a menu, so it's no longer quick-and-simple to try night shots with/without "the blur"; I wish they'd bring this back, or make it an option. I'm sure it confused beginners, but it was a really handy feature.
