It's nice to see a pocket camera coming with more than a 3x Zoom. I've been using Canon digital cameras for years and they are by far my favorite brand. Price is decent. You can find it a bit cheaper online from a No-Name etailer but who knows if you'd even get it.
we just bought the panasonic fz5 w/ 10x optical. it's not as compact as the canon sd series (we have an older sd model that the luminox is replacing), but the zoom is great.
If you want to compare the FZ5 to a Canon camera you'd have to compare it to the S5IS as they are both a step up from the pocket camera. The S5IS also has a 10X zoom and I think it is a little cheaper than the FZ5 right now.
....
it is nice to see a camera with 5x zoom, i am going to wait til after christmas when no one has any money and the prices will fall.
nerancher, does the live cashback crap really work? how long does it take to get your money?
Any other brand that is better then cannon?
Is this wide angle lens like 880?
....
I think I've found my next pocket camera...
cashback is at 25% now. i received 10% off ebay, didn't know it's one time use, wasted it. both work, according to ebay and mslive.
We went instead with the Sony DSC-150 which is very similar in feature set/size and offers a 2.7" screen and Zeiss lens but only 8 megapixels (do you really need more for Point and Shoot?). For both cameras, you'd be surprised how handy it is to have an optical viewfinder, even if it is only 80 percent accurate. I really like how the Sony operates and organizes pictures by date taken, which makes them easy to work with.
at this price, i would much rather put in another $47 to get the Canon PowerShot SD990 IS 14.7-MP Digital Camera which was on sale for $307 about two weeks ago. just wait. there will be another better deal on camera. especially BF is coming.
For point-and-shoot cameras, I prefer Canon. I have some friends who use Sony's cybershots, but they just don't seem to have the same quality in terms of the shots.
Ben, the 3LAF35ZAA5 coupon doesn't work.
#12, I'd instinctively agree with you though there's definitely another side to it. $47 is almost 20% of the total price, and you basically just get the extra megapixels (the optical zoom is the same I believe). Is the extra money worth it for the MP's? When we're talking about stuff over 6-7 MP's, it's really hard to see any difference. It's basically diminishing returns - so if you feel like you're getting a good deal spending 20% less on this model just go for it.
No, this isn't a wide angle zoom camera. Dpreview lists it from 37mm-185mm. A wide angle would be 28mm like the 870is.
what about battery life? don't you need a backup lithium when your snaping shots at a wedding and the cam dies? I was thinking of going with the canon's that use AA batts for this very reason? thoughts?
I've had good battery life with mine. on amazon u can get a camera case + battery combo for pretty cheap too, way cheaper than bestbuy anyway.
#17 Just some info if it helps you to decide. I think this uses nb-5l for a battery pack, search somewhere like ebay, or other. I've seen some of the generic batteries don't hold a charge as well according to reviews, maybe look for regular canon ones if you want to be somewhat safe, I'm sure some generics would be ok though. Either way, some of them are rather reasonable.
I see the review site steves-digicams.com says that the 890 is rated for 320 pictures with lcd on, 800 off.
thnx nerancher....how many shots can one get with an AA battery based camera, on average?
