Does one really need 12.1mp on a point and shoot?
No - 12mp are usually enough.
people have a mp size complex when it comes to digital cameras. more means better to them. most will just resize their image down anyways unless they are using it for print. otherwise, the average joe doesn't need a 4000px x 3000px image.
