Seems like every few months they are increasing number of megapixels. Is 14.7 really neccessary?

dont be fooled by those who say "oh no it has more than 3MP!! too many megapixels for the sensorz!#$! its gonna suck!!"

these are the same people that bought cameras based on high MP before the new trend became too much MP = noise, do some research and youll find that this camera produces less noise than lower MP cameras, even in high ISO modes

also for the sd880 vs sd990 debate -
comments from people that actually have BOTH Cameras:

      http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1010&message=30031935&q=sd990&qf=m

      highlights:
"The 990 images are *much* less noisy even at the same ISO. "

"There's no question that IQ is better on the 990 indoors. "

"that is the same kind of noise/distortion I got with my 880...really hated it. Unacceptable in my opinion."

"14.7Mp tiny sensor beats 10Mp Pinhead sensor by quite a margin there for NR / noise at 100% . go one stage further and reduce the 990 to 10Mp and re-sharpen and it'll wipe the floor with the 10Mp camera .. this was my argument for the A650 over the A720 before any handling, build, battery life or any of the other numerous practicality improvements the 650 offered came into play.."

"Yes, I'm leaning toward the 990. Most of my shots will be indoors with challenging light conditions. The 990 clearly handled this better than the 880."

#10 and #11 -- Search my prior posts to find the ones about Abe's of Maine. I have a lot of friends and coworkers who have purchased a lot there and have always been very happy. More details in the other postings, I'm not going to re-type it here, sorry. YMMV, of course.
