I'm debating between this and the Lumix ZS3. Can't find ZS3 in stock anywhere though, and need it for a trip by the end of the month! Tempted to pull the trigger on this now, even though it looks like the ZS3 is the better camera.
I was just looking at this and the Lumix ZS3 myself. Seems to be $399 everywhere as well, $80 more than this one. So this Canon can't zoom with the movies, but the Lumix can?
Yes, the ZS3 can do full optical zooming during video recording, while the SX200 can only do digital zooming during movies, for what that's worth (not much). The other reasons I wanted the ZS3 include: a better LCD (twice the resolution of the SX200), wider angle lens, stereo mics for videos, flash recharges faster, and it's a little thinner and lighter than the Canon. It seems as most reviews that compare the two pick the Lumix hands down for both features and image quality.
The only thing the SX200 has going for it, in my opinion, are fully manual controls and 50 dollars cheaper (80 dollars cheaper with this deal). If I didn't have a trip coming up I'd definitely wait for the ZS3.
Thanks for the info! I've also looked at both the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 & DMC-FX500 to bring the price down a bit more. The FX500 is cheaper, but seems hit or miss as far as quality goes, but the TZ5 seems to be a much better camera. What do you think warrents the extra money for the ZS3 rather than the TZ5? The resolution & stereo mics?
Thanks!
With the ZS3 (or TZ7 outside the US) you're going to get a little longer zoom at 12x compared to 10x on the TZ5 along with a slightly wider viewing angle. The ZS3 increases the megapixel count from 9 to 10. Also, the ZS3 adds two more autofocus points 11 compared to 9. You're also going to get a higher resolution display. HDMI-output on the ZS3 along with a new file format, AVCHD Lite, for better video performance. Dimensions are a little smaller on the ZS3, and the ZS3 weighs a little less than the TZ5. Also, the ZS3 has more scene selection settings than the TZ5. ZS3 has stereo mics, while TZ5 is mono. All this and a new image processor and better face detection to boot. ZS3 is one helluva camera, if Panasonic only added fully manual controls it would have left the competition in the dust.
