Good price on a great camcorder.
for a closer look at the Canon VIXIA HF100 see
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Canon-Vixia-HF100-Camcorder-Review-35094.htm
This is the HD camcorder to own.
HD for only $500. No moving parts in a SDHC = no noise picked up in the sound, and no moving parts to fail. SDHC getting very cheap - 4GB for the cost of a tape now. Hotshoe and external mic inputs. Canon 12X lens. Li battery. Good autofocus. Built-in light/flash (weak output, but then there is the hotshoe if you need a bit more). HDMI out. Small size, yet decent user controls.
I've never read a bad review of this camera.
Yet, this is merely a good price, not a great price. I'm holding out for a lower discount in the near future.
I've had this camcorder for ~7 months and I have no complaints. The image stabilization especially helps at high zoom, and since it's so lightweight it's less tiring to hold it up for long periods of time. Just make sure you've got plenty of memory because at the highest bitrate it uses up ~8GB/hr.
I've been looking at this camcorder for a while now and this is a great price. HD at ~$500.00 is a great deal.
Good camera, solid-state is cool, but AVCHD still not as good overall as HDV. It's also a PITA to edit, even on a fairly new system.
Also, when you shoot HDV you self-archive to tape. Here, you need to transfer to PC, then to what? With HDV you buy 12GB of storage (one tape) for $2.50. SDHC isn't there--yet.
Finally, check out the camcorderinfo review. The new Sony is killing this camera (their words, not mine) but at a higher price.
#6, sure, but good enough (at a much cheaper price) usually beats superior (but much more expensive) technology in the marketplace. Sony learned that lesson before (Betamax vs. VHS), and is learning it still (Blu-ray vs. upscaled DVD) (Wii vs. PS3). Also see SCSI vs. IDE.
This version of "good enough" is still very, very good. I went for the Canon.
