Is this a good camcorder or are their other ones that would be better to purchase? My son is going to Japan and is looking for some thing with a camera that takes movies or a camcorder that he can get still off of. Would this one be good for that?

Go to camcorderinfo.com to answer your questions about this and other camcorders. Its a very awesome site.

I've got an HV30 and love it. Bought mine for $800 from Amazon about a month and a half ago.

buy a camcorder with flash memory as storage. microdrives and miniDV are old school.

I have the HV30 and it is hard to believe how good it is. #8 isn't wrong. I bought mine from Meijer.com because if you sign up for an account (no cost or obligation) they give you a 10% off code. The HV30 was on sale last week (might still be) so 800 minus 80 is what I paid with no tax. Bought Vegas Video with the $80 I saved. Uses regular miniDV tapes (inexpensive, long term storage, available nearly everywhere). See amazon for JVC M-DV60DU. The HV20 and the HV30 have a HUGE indie-filmmaker following (www.hv20.com).

Here's a good review on the camcorder. The price looks good, I haven't found it cheaper anywhere else. The cheapest I found elsewhere was $755 on pricegrabber.
