according to Citibank's site, the Citi Diamond Preferred Rewards Card has no annual fee for only the first year. $85/yr after that

Link? I've had Citi Diamond Preferred Rewards for 5 years and they've never asked for an annual fee.

The best cash back card if you spend over about $15K per year is Amex Blue Cash (not listed). 5% back on gas & groceries after the $6500 threshold is one way to stave off the high prices. 5% cash back on $4 gas can get you $3 per fill-up on a 15 gallon tank. Get back $5 for $100 worth of groceries. 1.5% everywhere else after the $6500 threshold.

Actually, credit cards help me get back about $800 each year in cash rewards. We have an American Express Blue and charge EVERYTHING we can. We pay it in full each month and have never paid a bacon double bacon burger in finance charges (or any other fee for that matter).

#3 if you do not carry a balance the credit card companies know they cannot charge you an annual fee, or you would cancel the card.

If you do carry a balance you should avoid credit cards, paying 19% is for suckers.

If you already have a citibank diamond card that pays 5% from dollar one, why do you use the amex card? If you spend 15,000 per year on gas, groceries, drug stores, because of the lower payout on the first $6500, you are really only getting 3.2667% back overall.

Since my grocery store does not accept credit cards (and charges much less than the fancy store that does), I have no hope of spending enough over the $6500 on these categories.

Accepting a sub-normal rebate on my first $541 per month(6500/year) does not sound like a good deal to me.

The alaska airlines mileage plan is not bad. At a favorite restaraunt I use a citibank card to get 3% back, also use an entertainment book coupon for buy 1 get one free entree, and since it it part of the mileage plan I get 3 miles per dollar spent there!

The mileage plan only uses 20,000 miles for a one way ticket which normally is very expensive. Nice way to return from a one way cruise.

I do all my spending on the Amex card because I haven't found a better deal. I average 2-3% cash back for a total around $750 per year. The farther you go past $6500, the less it matters.

I do carry a balance on the citibank card.. I've it around since College (upgraded to diamond about five years ago). Shortly after, they offered a no fee balance transfer for the life of balance at 1.9%. I promptly increased my credit line, transferred a large balance and I've been happy ever since making the minimum payments.
