Because of the speed difference, I just can't justify buying a USB 2 dock for disk drives. USB 3 makes the external drive run just as good as if it were plugged into the motherboard.
^ It'll perform far faster than on USB2 but it won't keep up with an e/SATA with a modern HDD, let alone a SSD -

I do find USB2 acceptable for some things though, like streaming multimedia files so the only necessary performance metric is whether it can keep up with the playback bit rate.
without a fan on it, all these standup enclosures get hot enuf to cook hdd bearings
^ I have read that some double slot docks make the HDDs run hot, but my single slot Rosewill docsk with Seagate Green/LP drives in them don't get more than mildly warm.
