Every time I think about going to this site I try to tell myself not to make impulse purchases, but then I see something like a drum set for $136 and lose my mind. For that kind of money I'd be crazy not to buy it... right? I'll blame the mid-life crisis when the wife asks why we now have a drum set.
There are components and processes of manufacturing that determine the cost of a drum set. I just bought my 1 year old a set for 200 bucks that was actually pretty decent build quality. In a tomshell, here's the problems you'll likely experience:
-Getting them tuned. The toms' edge will likely not be perfect for the heads to rest on. It probably doesn't matter anyway.
-Shell build. This is probably not even a "ply" shell as you normally see with numerous, and different layers of wood. This is probably some formed MDF with a vinyl slapped on the outside. I've had Spirit drums sound good with this, so I won't knock the sound quality up front.
-Hardware: Next biggest problem. I've had to take a hacksaw for lugs that wouldn't come out of cheap sets. If you mess with this, dip each lug in vasoline before attaching. Try to secure any pedals down to the floor, or get plywood. Prevent hardware from moving. Improper and/or cheap mounted hardware eats at itself quick, leaving you without a component in your kit until replaced/repaired.
Cymbals: Don't let drunk uncle Joe slam the crap out of them. They'll probably crack under abuse. Even if they do, it's not like the sound will be that much degraded over it's "new" sound. You'll then have a "trash" cymbal.
Notice closeup pics aren't available. I would assume each kit is full of slight defects and such. I've seen it a million times. Shipping higher end kits cost more than this in packaging alone. I'd say for this price, you can only try it because 100 bucks will hardly put a dent towards a kit that will potentially (unlikely) sound 15x better. Make some noise
