I've used cheap cables like this one for years and have never noted a problem of any sort with them.
^ Cheap ones usually work fine but there can be problems buying long cheap cables due to poor signal integrity, or for example I have a microUSB cable that will only charge a phone, no data unless I wiggle it just right and the stars all align for long enough.
Then perhaps you have a connection problem rather than a cable signal issue.
