If your yard has steep grades go with a rear wheel drive model. Front drives have almost no traction and as you start up an incline the weight is transferred to the rear wheels. With a rear wheel version, you get more traction as the weight transfers. My mower with the larger rear wheels will actually pull me up the hill which makes the mowing much easier.
^ I usually just mow sideways on steep grades.
Actually, it's a much better idea, wherever possible, to mow in one direction one time, and then perpendicularly the next. Makes the lawn look better (or so I've been told).
Personally, I bought a self propelled Craftsman mower a couple years ago, when I bought my house. Used it ONCE, for about 1 hour, and the drive broke. When I called their 800 number to find out how to get it fixed, I was told I'd have to drop it off at my local store, and it could take 3-4 weeks to get it repaired.
I found it much easier to simply box it back up, and return it as broken. Then I went over to Walmart, and got a push yourself Weed Eater brand mower, with just about as much power, for half the price. Sorry, Sears, but if you only carry cheap garbage made in China, and expect me to pay quality Craftsman prices, you won't have my business!
^ My neighbor does alternate mowing direction and I don't. At the end of the day our yards look continuous / identical unless we'd set our mowers at different heights.
I pay a guy who doesn't speak English very well & I don't speak Spanish at all $10 a week.
