Sears.com has the Craftsman Digital Multimeter w/ AC Voltage Detector for $15 + shipping. Shipping is $6; free in-store pickup in most locations. This digital multimeter measures AC/DC volts, current and resistance. Also measures diode and continuity.
Bought one Saturday. I've only used it to check batteries but it seems to work fine. The only thing I didn't like was it didn't come with a battery (9 volt) or a case but for this price, no big deal.
Most meters don't come with a battery, usually only the lowest end junk does and they too often use a smaller, shorter lived, harder to find, and more expensive 12V cell the name of which I forget.
Harbor Freight has a digital multimeter that goes on sale at times for $2. It has similar capabilities to this meter, including measuring DC amperage up to 10amps, a diode test, a transistor test, and battery testing. I just got 5 a few weeks ago at that price.
If you jut need a meter around to measure battery voltages and, say, computer voltages, that harbor freight meter works great. It's a bit off on measuring low resistance values, but for volts it is quite accurate.
Also, if you need an AC voltage detector, Harbor Freight is running a sale for a 32 piece screwdriver set that includes an AC voltage detector. The entire 32 piece set only costs $5.
So, you could get both for around $7, and it includes a 32 piece screwdriver set.
I got a few of those multimeters a little while ago at that price, and they work great. Voltage measurements are spot on, and the DC amp measuring works great too. The only thing I've found it to be a bit off on it testing very low resistance values, such as ohms <10. At higher values it's more accurate, but still slightly off.
If you also need the AC power detector that was included in this sale, Harbor Freight is running a big parking lot sale right now, and they've got a 32 piece screwdriver set on sale for $4.99 that includes an AC power detector just like this one.
they had this sale a few weeks back, both are very useful and work great.
its a good deal, bought this multimeter years ago for 20. seems ok.

Thanks Ben. I've been meaning to measure my diode.

I am getting a price of $24.99 at this time with in store pickup. Sale Over?
Another better sale just started, on a similar meter. Get it for $2, on sale.
