For a basic 5.1 speaker setup (not 7.1), would this sound any better than my old SB Audigy?

yes, it would. It has the newest version of EAX for games, and the X-Fi crystallizer, that can actually improve the quality of mp3's, they claim, back to CD quality.

However, I'd strongly reccomend getting the X-Fi Xtreme Gamer instead of this card. I've seen it on sale a lot for $50, and it's a much better card than this one.
