    1. Take 10 seconds to look it up yourself.

    2. No.

For my previous 2 systems I just went with the on board audio. I have a decent 2.1 speaker system, but didn't think an add on sound card would make much difference. I was wrong, it does make a difference. My sound is MUCH better with this card.

Of course, if you don't care much about sound, most onboard audio is good enough.

Not a bargain - it is typically around $50 on sale.

Correct #7. Actually, Geeks.com had a brand new OEM X-Fi (which was only labeled X-Fi, but had a part # that corresponded to an X-Fi XtremeMusic) for $45. That card has served me well, as I was getting popping sounds every once and a while with my old Audigy 2.

For anyone looking for an X-Fi, do NOT buy the X-Fi XtremeAudio, as it does not carry a true X-Fi chipset like the XtremeGamer or XtremeMusic (now discontinued) did.

And yes, there is a difference, especially using the crystallizer which essentially brightens sounds. It is nice for a bass-heavy driven world.

Well, I bought this card about 9 months ago for $50 from newegg after 20 MIR.

I cannot say I saw a significant difference in gaming but I don't game much.

I always have hated creative's crappy software that gets installed by the drivers (about 3-4 running as processes) which does nothing and eats up your CPU for reasons you can't explain for the fact that this card is supposed to do its thing in the hardware not software.

Moreover this card has serious issues with nforce4 chipsets. Although I have an ASUS M2N32 SLI board which has a Nforce590 chipset, I'm still having problems in Windows Vista x64. The card stops working all of a sudden and/or hissing cracking intermittently. Changing modes seem to solve the problem temporarily. XP had no problems though.

I must say though that it is better than the shitty sound card that comes with ASUS M2N32 which was also cracking, breaking up problems out of the box.
