how loud is this thing?
Very quiet. It has a thermo-regulated fan. If you use it with WD green drives you'll never hear it. Don't let the price fool you, this is a top performer in NAS benchmarks, compares well with units that sell for 4 times the price. Easy to hack, too. This is a very good deal.
I bought one unit less than 6months ago and have regretted it.
I was away on a 10day vacation and came back to find the unit with both disk lights blinking (blue color) in unison. The unit hard workerto the default IP address.
I posted a query in the dlink forum and haven't received any helpful feedback. There was another user who reported an identical problem, and ended up buying a replacement box!
How about this unit that you don't need a rebate form to complete or wait for and it's cheaper though there is no free shipping. Aluratek, Cyclone 3.5 inch 2-Bay ESATA/USB2.0 RAID Storage Enclosure, ACDUES350F $69.87 plus shipping.
It's thermo-regulated as well but the picture shown and the item shown at the website for ALURATEK shows a different unit. It's a better looking unit.

#4 - your solution is not a network attached box. Big difference.....
#5 who the hell actually needs a NAS box? Just hook it up to one of your PCs that I know you're leaving on 24/7, and share it. That's what I did... <_<
#6 - Smart people that don't want to leave a PC on 24/7. I have a NAS box in my garage out of site. Setting one up sounds like it might be over your head though.....
What size drives can this handle? Is it limited to 1gig each?
I think it is 1.5 terabytes per. I just got this and I love it. Still haven't set up all the functions yet.
#6, if that PC runs windows then you continually risk data corruption from either malware or windows crapping on itself. A NAS is, if properly designed, less likely to go down for any reason compared to a PC. Just don't forget the extra measures you would take on a valuable PC too like a decent surge protector, periodically cleaning dust out.
I doubt this performs very well though, even if at the top of NAS benchmarks most consumer priced NAS do really poorly compared to a budget desktop build set up as a dedicated NAS. The tradeoff is a desktop setup as a NAS uses roughly 45W more power.
Better solution than windows, run Freenas. http://www.freenas.org
