Amazon has the D-Link Boxee Box Streaming Media Player on pre-order for $200 with free shipping. Runs Boxee software for streaming from MTV, Digg, TED Talks, Netflix and Pandora. Also features full 1080p support, USB ports for external hard drive connectivity, 802.11n and a QWERTY remote. Scheduled for November release.
You can also run the software (beta) on a PC to try it out. It's a little different than a typical media center pc - it's "social" so when you "friend" other people, their video feeds/recommendations start showing up on your main screen. Along with recommendations from the "boxee staff" dude. These are NOT optional, it's pretty much shoved down your throat. Despite negative feedback about this on the forums, boxee has pretty much said that users will just have to deal with it. That said, it's clean and works really well. Just hope your friend Bob lays off the smurf porn or you might have some explaining to the wife/family. Or a nice opportunity for a 2 1/2 way.
AppleTV is half the cost and produces Sonos like results once you start building multiple endpoints (Cheaper than Sonos now as well) in each of your rooms for multiple zones. 720p as a problem is an illusion for people that like to download their content from TPB or ripping their movies with such sub par bit rates they don't realize they're killing the reason for any resolution better than 720p.
This remind me transformer Allspark...
No UPNP/DLNA support yet, but then again that's addable later.
I'd like to see what can be done to hack the new Apple TV before I commit to this device though
"Your TV Can Haz Internets."
Apple tv sucks due to only 720p support. ...and it's an apple.
This will look great in a media console (vomits in mouth).
Old Apple TV wouldn't support my 3x4 HDTV. Yeah, it is old, but not that old and can display HD resolutions.
Meltdown edition!
Full price for an untried product is hardly a deal. More of an advertisement in drag as a deal.

I just want a blu-ray player with full fledged MKV support that costs <$300, why is that so much to ask?

BoxeeBox is too ugly, too expensive and too late.
#11 speaks truth.
