This looks like an awesome deal, but the review seemed to send mixed signals ... is it really worth buying or is it a truly incomplete product that will likely have issues and make me something of a beta tester for the technology?

If this still qualifies as too dangerous to use, can someone recommend something that is already good, tried and tested?

I have one and it's a good router. I eventually upgraded to the 825 but if you don't need dual bands the 655 is a great choice.

#2, this used to be the gbacono router. You might get lucky and get a good one. If you look at reviews older than 1 yr ago, they're very good. The recent ones have been troubling.

I've been using an Asus WL-520GU for a while (has USB but is only G), and just got the RT-N12 so I could have N (but it has no USB). Those routers run both dd-wrt and tomato. I have a NAS box so I don't need print serving or drive sharing from my router. I've also run the Netgear WNDR3300, very stable with dd-wrt, but limited range.

I haven't found any N routers with gigabit ports I liked at a good price point that would run dd-wrt and tomato. If you want to run stock firmware with drive sharing and have dual-band and gigabit, the Netgear WNDR3700 is high-rated, but costs like $130-150.

Flash it with dd-wrt, and it would run great.

#5, yeah, if only the DIR-655 were dd-wrt compatible.

@akrasn: If you're worried about this, check the reviews on the egg -- they sell a bunch of these.

I haven't checked up on these lately, but I've had one of these for over a year and it's been very fast (excellent throughput) and solid -- needs rebooting far less frequently than my previous routers. It just works - but I've got older firmware and I'm keeping it that way.

I thought these were great routers its just that the newer firmware sucks bad. Stay away from an upgrade!

Mine is about 1.5 years old and has been running solid. The latest reviews do seem troubling though.

The reviews for the Netgear WNDR3700 seem to be be good.

Can you add an expander to have a total of 8 wired ports?

The lack of Dual band is a big drawback, put a little more money and get Dual Band N.

I have an older unit and a new unit (one at my house and one I setup at my parents). Both units work great and have been for about 4 months now. They both have the latest firmware....
I am impressed with range coming from a MIMO dlink 108 g router previously.
