This is an insane price for an Intel SSD. So what's the catch? How does this model perform compared to the 2.5" 1st generation version?

So are these rejects from Intel? Seems like too good of a deal to be true.

Further research looks like these are Gen 1 without Trim and all the other goodies.

Chances are your existing motherboard doesn't support AHCI mode, so no TRIM for you! Check your bios - if there isn't a check box under "Integrated Peripheral" for AHCI SATA controller mode, you're just as good with this drive as with the most recent. Besides, Intel has a downloadable manual-TRIM SSD software kit.

Yes these are gen 1 drives, but still are great. I get a 7.8 in windows 7 with one drive in my laptop.
