Buy.com has the Data Robotics Drobo DR04DD10 4-Bay USB 2.0 & FireWire 800 Storage Array Enclosure for $450 - $40 rebate [Exp 5/31] = $410 with free shipping. Drobo's built-in software automatically self-heals around drive failures and data errors and expands capacity dynamically when you add a drive. [Compare]

rodeo cowboy overpriced for what it does. It doesn't even include any drives...

WHS+cheapo low power system will go the same thing (and a whole lot more) for less money. Mine cost $1300, but it includes 12TB of storage.

agreed, horribly overpriced, but WHS can't handle time machine backups without the looming threat of complete data corruption. the bug has been known for over a year, but there's still no fix.

You're all wrong #1 & #2. This sh*t does the "self-heals around drive failures," which theoretically means it will last forever. According to finance theory, this sh*t is currently underpriced. Now stop whining and go grab their stocks before people know it.

I thought the SP1 or SP2 of WHServer fixed the data corruption.

Does the Drobo talk AFP? If not it's gonna back up your macs just the same as the WHS product does.

I've been using WHS to do TM backups to my macs for some time now and it seems to work quite well.

i'm not opposed to admitting i'm wrong, but can someone post an article that indicates that the problem has been fixed?

#6, drobo is meant to hook directly to your computer (usb/fw) but droboshare (sold separately, along with rustproofing) does support afp.

really depends if whs has been fixed yet, or rather whether time machine works properly with smb shares. personally, i'd love to use whs to handle my backup needs. i have a few spare mobos lying around that need to be put to work. i haven't found anything that directly competes with drobo in terms of reliability, ease of use, and attractive design, regardless of price

It is not a bad idea. As drive capacity increases, or as you need space, you can swap out a drive and the raid rebuilds itself.
As far as Time Machine goes I have tried to do a full system restore using a backup and it did not work well. Pulling back a file or two no problems, but more than that I would go with something else. How many people test their backups, or just assume that Time Machine will work as hyped?
