Imagine if you have 4 1.5TB drives in there, have fun copying 6TB of stuff through USB2

    these are actually pretty nice.
i believe it offers raid-5, which gives data redundancy and a performance increase.

i agree there is a cap at the usb 2.0 or firewire 800 connection. but this is mainly for storage so you won't be running programs off this product. it's more for sensitive data that needs to be kept safe. g production films, important documents, etc.

good product, but a bit too pricey for my wallet.

Fi...re... Wi... re 800... get over the USB2 deal.
Its fast enough for most people, even for post production video editing.

it is rather pricey, but the overall idea is good. auto rebuilds any drive and you don't need to have similar drive sizes to have the raid.

HP's new MediaSmart servers are about the same price and IMO look to provide much more bang for the buck.

No, #10... Nobody said what lays eggs... #7 said "what chickens lay".

    So, there's that.

For those still catching up, the joke is roosters getting laid by chickens. A nice witticism by #9 was just ruined.

Then there's the ever-popular "Hey! Wanna get laid? Crawl up a chicken's ass and wait".

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? I say neither, it was the eggplant.

I'm gonna guess the egg came first, because it's the one getting laid.

#6, come on, don't you know that in case of drive failure the Drobo system dispatches a host of nanobots, which actually heal the failed drive? Well worth the money!

G4 liked this product. I don't think the comparison to the HP Mediasmart server is valid. Windows Home Server is superior in some ways, like doing automated backups of PCs logged into the network. However, Home Server does not even have a backup application for itself, last I checked, and without that feature, it just doesn't compare to a Drobo for data security. The ability to replace failed drives and do a RAID-5-like rebuild is quite comforting. It also can use mis-matched drive sizes, allowing you to upgrade a drive at a time. An external hard drive might be a more economical solution for backup for a single user, but not for a network.

It's not just for corporations. My brother had 100s of gigs of photowork. My wife is not far behind. $1500 for a hard drive recovery service makes this a decent deal if you want to protect the important files /photos of several people. If you're very young, you don't know what I'm talking about. But start putting together decades of photos, documents, contact info, quicken data, electronic tax returns, etc., and you'll see why data security is not just for corporations. And then there's the fact that DVD-Rs seem to die after a few years.

Oh, and like others pointed out, it's a lot cheaper to buy the USB-only model if you have no use for Firewire 800.

If you're not sure what this would be useful for or what "self-healing" a drive looks like, follow Ben's link and check out the product video demo.

these are bloody expensive for what you get, think about it... you could get a small raid server for less.

#17, a hundred gig of photos is just 13 DVD-ROMs (8 GB each), which will run you roughly $16.
