Question, will this use color toner when printing in B&W? I've been told some color lasers do.

#1 This model come with one black and three color toner cartridges- so I think they use black toner for B/W printing. However according to Dell spec- each toner can print up to 700 pages. And the replacement toner is priced higher than $60- so maybe you can finish the toner and sell the machine on eBay or get more printers this time for their cartridge.

This has great reviews but they warn it has one of the most expensive toners of any printer. I bought this for about $21 more 6 months ago direct from Dell. Been very happy with it since I don't use it excessively. Good print quality and the printer itself has a small footprint.

However, if I could do it again, I probably would have gotten a wireless one. My inket is wireless and I find I'm always printing to that one from my laptop because I'm too lazy to hook up the Dell laser printer. That's probably why the original toner hasn't run out yet!

If you buy 4 ( a set) then the cost will be $120
So you buy another 2 printers for $120 and you get 8 original cartridges. Cheaper than buy after market ones.

The toners are expensive, but they do last a good bit of time compared to any other laser toners that I have had.

Don't own this model, but yes most color lasers waste color toner even if printing only B&W - even if you specifically send the print job/set in printer properties that it's B&W. Most also refuse to print (even an) B&W pages if one of the color cart is empty, although some allow you to reset the empty alert or do other tricks like cover over an optical sensing window on the cart to fool the printer into thinking it isn't out of that color toner.

For this reason, it is best to own a B&W in addition to a color laser and always print to the B&W when you don't need color. The B&W printer can easily pay for itself by the time you would've ordered the first set of replacement carts for the color laser.

The toner that comes with new printers is called a sampler toner, they only contain a fraction of the toner vs when purchasing the toner itself.
