Dell makes no printers, simply rebadging and adding middleman markup to other printer manufacturers products, sometimes adding a chip to prevent less expensive cartridges or refilling too.

Only reason to buy a Dell printer is if it is highly discounted in a new Dell system purchase, or above all else you feel the need for color matched computer components and that when it's a different printer that matches one of their system color schemes.

I only buy printer if there are a lot of compatible cartridge or toner available. As to Dell's printer- I guess the cost of toner/drum will their product very costy in the long run...

rodeo cowboy, you do know that most Printer companies don't even make their own printers? There are only 2 companies that make the print engines. Even HP does not make their own printer. They take the engine, and spec some stuff around it, and have a 3rd party make it for them. Dell does the same thing. I have found that toner costs are directly linked to the price of the printer. The cheaper the printer to buy, the more expensive the toner, and just the opposite for expensive printers. Note how many prints per cart, that is where you get your true cost to own, not the upfront cost of the toner. That being said, I find Dell printers to be about average price wise.

    You are clueless.

Fact is, Dell does nowhere near as much spec'ing as the major printer manufacturers, regardless of who owns the factory that actually manufactured it. Dell doesn't design the tech, mostly just slaps their name on, maybe slight cosmetic changes to the outer shell and as mentioned they may require the printer use security chips or fuses to thwart refilling or buying non-compatible (but would otherwise be compatible) cartridges.

Real printer manufacturers may do this too, but they don't try to rob you so much on the cartridges.

It is true that the cheaper the printer the higher the cost per page in many cases, but you ignore that cartridges can be refilled, rebuilt, or 3rd party compatible new cartridges bought instead, so basically you ignore all the good ways to save a LOT of money.

For example, last printer cartridge I refilled, I got 15,000 pages worth of toner for $25 delivered off ebay (regular price though, fixed price from a toner vender). I didn't mistype that, 15 thousand.

Now on Ben's site, we've often see 3 packs of cartridges for the smaller printers for about what, $75? Equivalent cartridges from Dell, meaning the cartridge for this printer which is a 2230d is a 3,500 page cartridge and costs $139.99 !! T

This printer is a rebadged Lexmark E260d. Lexmark themselves sells brand new return program cartridges for theirs at $100 instead of $140.

    http://www.lexmark.com/lexmark/product/home/753/0,6970,204816596_846011161_1287200497_en,00.html?tabId=1

Amazon sells the new Lexmark cart for $103 with free shipping.

Because they both use unique chips for identification, neither can be refilled or use 3rd party cartridges so they are far more costly to operate than other printers in the same price range. Some older Lexmark printers chips were reverse engineered and you can find toner refill kits that include a new chip, but it takes awhile after the printer has been in the market and Lexmark has been more aggressive in making this difficult (and suing companies making chips for their printer), with the result that this printer model, and others going back more than two years ago, don't have chips available and probably never will meaning you are stuck paying the premium for cartridges.

Now contrast another printer that is normally about $200 before a sale or rebate, a Samsung ML-2855ND which has a higher duty cycle of 50K pages a month (built better) vs 35K for the Dell or Lexmark, and ethernet networking capability too. This isn't some golden example, there are plenty of printers with either substantially lower cost cartridges worth 3,000 to 4,000 pages, or give you 5K pages or more for $100 to $140 and I mean at this $200 before a discount and under price range for the printer itself.

Heck, even the Brother and Samsungs Ben's been listing for the past 3 or more years that end up under $60, only cost about $70 for a 3,000 page new OEM cartridge.

That Samsung 2855 uses 5K page cartridges that are $88 delivered (might cost less elsewhere, I just looked at Newegg 'cuz that's where I looked for the printer itself for this example), compared to the Dell 3K5 page cartridge at $140.

Nice on topic comeback, but you learned something about printing and may save hundreds of dollars as a result.

That's pretty dumb, considering I proved it wrong wrong wrong. All your pseudo-knowledge is useless, and costly.
