SecondAct has the refurbished Dell Axim X51v 624MHz 64MB VGA 480x640 802.11b Bluetooth PDA for $130 + $15 shipping = $145 shipped. It dates back from late 2005, but it has features that are still quite relevant today. [Review]
3.7" color TFT VGA display with 640x480 resolution, 802.11b and Bluetooth
CompactFlash Type II and Secure Digital / SDIO Now! / MMC card slots
I'm not sure why anybody would want one in the eara of smart phones. I have two PDAs sitting in drawers gathering dust. I'll be wiping them and donating them to charity soon.
#1 .. Geeky types that use real engineering programs written for PC DOS (yes that's right DOS) luv these things. Load up Pocket DOS, and use all those cool DOS Engineering programs to solve problems on the road (g MATLAB, DERIVE, EUREKA etc etc) U can't do that on a dumb "smart" phone
Dell does still support these as far as drivers and original firmware. As for upgrades. There are tons upon tons of support and upgrades for these. Example, I am using the same current smartphone version of windows OS for my X51v. It is stable and reliable. and now I can use all the updated software for smartphones as opposed to just PDA software.
The problem though. Post #1 is completely right. I may use the same software as a smartphone, but without wi-fi and skype. My Axim still does not make phone calls. I use it quite a bit, but these are very close to becoming obsolete.
This is arguably THE BEST pocket PC that has ever been produced. It is packed with features and it cost $500 at one time. Yes, smart phones are more popular but this thing can do so much more including VGA output with an adapter. This is still a very popular and powerful device.
Have one, have used it everyday for one thing or another since 2005 (x50v).
It is running Windows Mobile 6point1. There is a very active group that continually ports the newest OS. I guess it has become more of a hobby than a real necessity.
i have a gps for it that I use tomtom with, and drive all around with it when I travel. I have geocaching programs that I use on it, I use it to watch movies when I'm sitting in airports, I can check my gmail with it or go to bensbarbacon if I'm bored, and I have a ton of games on it.
@#10, with an update to windows mobile 6.1, it works with sdhc, same with my x50v. Also, if you already have a sip server setup, there are programs to use these as voip phones.
This is a VERY good price for a very capable PDA. Personally, I prefer using a PDA that is not a phone. It saves me $30 a month for "data fees", and the screen is much better than the crappy ones Verizon offers. I still prefer the HP form factors, but at this price I might just have to pick one of these up.
I loved mine before I had to give it back to the company. On most trips, I could take this instead of a laptop. Watching movies on it while traveling was just amazing, better than anything else at the time. For the price, you can't beat it as a web appliance, programmable remote, media player, etc.
I bought mine for $300 a few years ago. I use it a few times a week as a TV remote, ssh client, music streamer.. Works with orb.. Takes notes.. Syncs to Gmail. A bit frustrating at times, but useful.. If you have say a netbook however.. That will do all of this much better aside from the TV remote part ; )

Be aware that since Dell no longer sells these the chances of any upgrades or enhancments are slim to none.

Sorry to tell you #2. You are nearly wrong.

I remember I almost bought one of these back then for about $280 new. Those were the days when dell would have outrageous deals every other day.
Why doesn't the secondact $10 off any purchase code work here?
nevermind, says no coupons on the description. But I doubt this was ever $849.99 new like it says, EVER...
Yummy... 3 year old batteries... you should budget for a replacement assuming you can get one.
If only it supported SDHC. They make very good PMP.
I have one of these and LOVE it.

it's like the best little thing ever.

Thanks #12. I will dust mine off and start using it with a large SDHC card.

#11, what is the point of using the gps along with this? the gps should be standalone.
looks like a neat little toy
Great PMP and web surfer. Link a Bluetooth keyboard, and you can prepare and email Word documents. It has one of the best screens, ever.

Might just have to grab this...

good point #19. At half the price of a netbook, I would probably go with the netbook.
