Windows 2000 has a small footprint and runs very fast.

This computer is more then enough for general use.

Consider the shipping, product life, replacement parts availability- this is not worth the hassle...

W2K won't run fast on this box. You won't be able to install many progs that you might need these days. Welcome back to 1999. This might make a decent server, but not a good general purpose machine unless you don't need fast internet surfing to be happy. You can get much better for $100 on CL. Avoid.

For about the same total price ($100) you can get a GX270 on eBay with at least a 2.6GHz processor and 512MB of RAM with Windows XP.

My GX270 with 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM and the standard 40GB hard drive running Ubuntu 9.10 works great for a guest machine.

The beating of this dead horse is already over:

#5 I'd agree that upgrading or replacing parts on something this old and relatively valueless doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but Newegg still offers brand new AGP video cards, IDE hard drives, IDE optical drives, memory, and any number of PCI add-in boards for these "vintage" boxes.

This pricing is ridiculous for sure, but it doesn't change the fact that these old boxes will still do 90% of what a mainstream user might want. I have several of these in the house for the kids, and they are virtually indestructible.

#8, a Dead "Horse"? Man, this has been a Dead Possum since like 2005.

Do a search on Dell Optiplex Problems. You'll find that these computers had bad capacitors.

I picked up a GX270 on ebay a few weeks ago for $79 shipped. 80GB Hard Drive, Win2000 License, 512MB Ram, P4 1.8 I think. I just threw another 512MB RAM in there and installed XP Pro and my daughter was thrilled. Itunes, Facebook, etc. is all she does. Runs like a champ. Oh and added a DVD player that was laying around also.
