They were still making chunky models as little as 5-10 years ago, and apparently even today. Yes it's more bulky to carry but all else equal, that makes it more durable too and often results in things you won't think much about till a problem happens, like a separate daughter board for USB ports so if you were to damage one you don't have to replace or do microsurgery on the mainboard, instead replacing only the separate USB socket PCB... though never having poked around inside this series, that is only a generalization.
