For some reason I think all-in-one printer/scanner/faxing machines break down twice as fast as separate components. Maybe someone can prove me wrong?

#1 you may be correct, but we all need fax, color scanner and color printing occasionally. The rest of the time, I use a $50 laserjet bought 8 yrs ago and we're still on the 2nd $35 toner. The color replacements for the all-in-one are $44 and I avoid them. I'm fairly certain the ink is dry now, but the faxing and scanning still works perfectly.
Is Dell the only place to get replacement ink? That would be the main question I asked before purchase.
I think Lexmark makes Dell printers, so you should be able to use Lexmark cartridges.
