Tool King has the refurbished DeWalt DCK555XR 18-Volt Cordless XRP 5-Tool Combo Kit for
$470 with free shipping with coupon code
HOTDOG. Kit includes DCD950 XRP 1/2" 18V hammer-drill / drill / driver, DC385 XRP 18-volt reciprocating saw, DW919 18-volt flexible floodlight, DC390 XRP 18-volt circular saw, DC825 18-volt impact driver, 2x 18-volt XRP batteries, and a contractor carrying bag.
This is actually a very nice set. The impact driver is very useful and the drill come with a fairly effective hammer setting. The flood light is very bright. And when can you not use a saws all? That is the question. I would make sure you are ok with whatever the warranty period is for refurbs tho.
I would not spend that much money for refurbished tools.
I paid less than this for the 6 piece at Home Depot new with their regular specials.
18v? why even bother.... 28v is where it is at.
^ Depends on how often you use it, a set with Li-Ion packs will have the packs die in 5 years just from shelf rot, while if you only lightly use it the NiCd or NiMH should last closer to 10 providing they have a smart charger like Dewalts' do, and of course that you don't "reverse charge" damage any cells in the pack by trying to keep using the tool once the battery is almost dead.
Besides the weight issue, these latter two issues are what turn a lot of people off of older battery tech or cheaper drills. My Dewalt drill has lasted 15, maybe 20 years needing only a relatively inexpensive DIY battery pack cell swap, I certainly wouldn't want to have to plop down $50 or more every 5 years for new Li-Ion packs unless it was used for contract/professional work.
Then again, over 20 years ago I spent some summers doing HVAC rough-in installation work using a ~ $50 9.6V Craftsman drill, drained and recharged the thing a few times every day using it constantly and it still works fine except for the dead batteries, so while there is an argument for a fancier drill there is also one that even these Dewalts are a lot to pay for if you like to upgrade tools that still work later on, and of course that you have a good corded drill too for jobs that any cordless would have a tough time handling.
For example I just can't bring myself to pay for cells to rebuild the old Craftsman 9.6V's battery pack though I might when I have another reason to buy more cells for something else. Fitted with 8 x tabbed AA instead of sub-C, it would make a nice lightweight cordless screwdriver at low cost to revive.
Whatever you buy will look dull and outdated a decade later. Shiny new toys are sometimes an incentive to get some projects done.
Thanks dave_c for the detailed story... I would say if you are in need a set like this, shop around because you might get a brand new set for the same price somewhere. I bought this set five years ago and it has served me well. The hammer drill is pretty good but there is nothing very especial about the flashlight. The impact drill is a must for some jobs. The reciprocal saw is a good one and will last and the circular saw cuts about 15 to 20 feet of 2x4 before the battery stops on you (depending on the texture of the wood). I recommend this set but you should be able to buy new for the asking price here. Good luck.
