do i need a receiver to get this to work? or can i just plug this device into my HDTV and get decent sound?

#1: The spec's say it's powered, so by taking the audio out from your tv and plugging into this, it should work. At this price-point though, a small H/T setup might be a better choice. I'm still not convinced that these "sound-bars" will sound as good as a TV alone. I guess it depends on the TV.
Well i hope it sounds better then my v would hate to spend money on this and have it sound the same.
You are sacrificing sound quality for the lack of clutter. I'm sure it is an upgrade over the TV speakers but not much.
