Although I think Dremel makes good stuff, I have noticed that the variable-speed units tend to burn out their speed controller under heavy use. The solution is to buy one of these and power it through a phase control -- that is, an ordinary light dimmer. Since those are usually rated for at least several hundred watts, this thing isn't likely to burn one up. And if you do manage to use up the Dremel part, replacing it is just as cheap.
