Consumer reports ratings are just ok generally on Dyson. Often out performed by much less expensive brands/models. That big ball isn't going under beds or other low places. Seems like the Apple cult thing. Some must have it regardless of the performance just so they can say they have one.

Consumer Reports ratings are totally bogus. Over the years I have purcahsed several of their highly rated products from cars to vacuum cleaners and they were not durable at all (their highly rated 2002 Volkswagon Passat wagon was a complete disaster having four major recalls (valves, front end struts, emission control etc.) and we purchased the car brand new. I have had a Dyson for nine years. The thing has been great as has the customer service with the company. We have big, hairy golden retrievers and their fur has killed several brands of vacuums (including Orecks) This is the only one that has stood up over time, continues to clean as well as the day that we bought it is the Dyson. Best of all has a filter that you can wash so you don't have to buy a new $100 filter every 6 months.

CR's testing methodology is suspect at best, useless at worst. The problems with it are too extensive to list all of them in the space provided in this forum. Just a couple however include poor testing methodolgy and not factoring pertinent criteria into the process for the use of most items. For example, their rating of the iPhone 4 was "unacceptable" for multiple reasons is another example of the yo-yos at CR not knowing what they are talking about. Their review of the smart phone had so many inherent flaws it can barely be counted as scientific.

Consumer reports testing does leave a lot to be desired because often they seem to fixate on features or performance but not durability, or on the wrong features, but in some cases they can manage to do things right, like scatter crud on a floor and see how well a vac picks it up.

I wouldn't think it fair to say the Dysons hold up well over time with so many of them sold as refurbs.

Forgetting CR for a moment (although, I think it makes a good starting point for your *own* research) the problem with Dyson is that it is just over priced! Dyson is a genius at all sizzle and no steak. I tip my hat to the him.

Miele though, there is a vacuum that costs much more *and* delivers.

Dyson = Sharper Image = As Seen on TV = Over priced crap

Consumers Reports = Fish Wrapper = Smelly
