That makes sense... I like the concept, but the reality is a bit weak.

If only Walter White and Jesse had one of these when they were stranded far away from ABQ, the viewers wouldn't have learned about how galvanic elements are made and (falsely) saved them.

The ultmate would be one that clips on to the battery on each side, steps up the voltage by a factor of ten or more, then steps it back down at the other end. That way the wire size could be very small and flexable. When you think about how much of this voltage level shifting is going on in UPS, the circuits should be cheap.

Anybody want to file the patent application for me?

I've used one, but it only works if the victim vehicle has an always-on lighter socket. As the Apollo 13 astronauts discovered, you can't transfer power through a relay that's unable to energize itself!

I carry regular jumper cables, but because this is so light, I also carry one of these. Figure it can't hurt to have the option.

^ Often the victim vehicle's battery will have enough juice that turning the key one click will be able to toggle the relay and make it work. This wastes a little power, but not all that much so long as the ventilation fan isn't running. By "work" I mean take a dreadfully long time to raise the battery voltage.

That's only a secondary problem, the electronics to do that would cost a fair amount more than just moving down 2 or 3 gauges (larger) wire size. The more significant problem is you're still asking for both vehicles' lighter sockets, chassis wiring, and fuses to handle more current than they are designed for. Often the limit there is between 10-20A.

What I mean is, you're suggesting connecting directly to the batteries which would bypass this issue, but this type of jump starter is more of a hands-off device for someone who doesn't want to be under the hood.

Does anyone here tried this themselves? Is it working perfectly for you?
