Are these really as good as people say? How do they compare to a decent set of 5 1/4 speakers. 3" just seems too small.
For the price they aren't bad when combined with the matching sub. But if you can afford better then buy better. I like the 3 front speakers to comfortably go down below 80hz - lower if possible - better yet all 5. The reason is that the source of sounds above 80hz are really easy to locate. Sounds below 80hz are harder to locate.
What that means is that with speakers like these that have to crossover to a subwoofer at 120hz your ears will hear the source shifting back and forth between the speakers and the subwoofer.
These little Take Classic are also better in a small room. They just can't produce the volume for a large room. The little Klipsch Quintet IIIs will go louder but have the same frequency response limitations.
Good info #2. Small area drivers just can't move enough air to reproduce lower frequencies, no matter what Bose tries to tell you...
#3, logically, I know what you're saying must be true, but when I sit in front of a Bose Theater system it freaking rocks, even with the little speakers. I watched the Matrix on somebody's big plasma with a medium-expensive Bose system (probably $1500) and it was amazing. I spent a few minutes trying to figure out where all the big sound was coming from.
#4 all of the "big" mid bass is coming from the bass module but their are big holes in the frequency response. A set of Klipsch Quintets and a good Hsu Research sub will flat out blow the doors off those Blose for 1/2 the price. Move up to good bookshelf speakers with frequency range of 80-20khz and a good Hsu Research sub sized for the room and it will really rock you.
You're definitely right, #5.
#4, Bose systems have "sparkle" - meaning they'll wow you with some midbass and some sparkly high notes, but listening to extended periods of dialogue can get fatiguing - voices that're supposed to be full sound tinny, and James Earl Jones sounds like he's disembodied and half coming from your floor (which he is, half his voice will be routed to the sub).
The new Sony setup with the 1" satellites are even worse offenders in this regard.
Not so hot a deal. These guys are now owned by Canton, the German speaker company and they have them made in Mexico. They used to be better sounding when they were made in Toronto.
KLH is the up and coming brand now. Really tight bass. Fluance speakers are the bomb 2.
Don't waste your money on this no name brand.
