If you don't care about the eSATA.

The ESATA makes it able to be used in the future when it is
the standard,it is also about 4x faster then USB 2.0

I bought two sets of the $80 combo hard drive + dock deal at New Egg. That is truly a bargain.

#3, I am not sure the eSATA will become the external connection interface standard in the near future, the USB 3.0 is much more likely, IMO. It certainly gets more support from the PC manufacturers. Most pc sold today still do not have an external eSATA connection standard.

Can I use this to see if my external drive failed or if it's just the housing?

#8, you plug a bare hard drive into this and then connect a USB/eSATA cable between this dock and your pc.

#3 yeah with a name like startech, it even sounds futuristic! like "space 1999" lol. If you are comfortable messing with your computer one of the docks or externals I saw recently came with an esata kit which is a cable from the motherboard to a port on a blank so you could add esata to your computer(that had a spare sata plug)
