There are several poor reviews out there of Fantom GreenDrive products. Has anyone used one of these for over 3 years?
I've seen far better reviews for this than the freeagent ones.
I have had the 500GB model for about a year and have no complaints. No fan so very quiet. Runs warm but not hot. It is my understanding that the drive inside is a WD Green Drive. I have no comment on the eSATA hookup as I have never used it -- it's just something I got for the future.
I've had this one for about 6 months, use it eSata only, for backups. Been great so far.
What I'm interested in is the performance. Anybody find reviews? While this is cheaper, Newegg has a Cavalry drive with a 16mb cache that's tempting me. Also comes with an esata bracket and cable. As far as I can tell, no cable comes with this.
This is basically a WD Green power drive slapped in an external case.

$23 more, but no rebate, free shipping, 16MB cache guaranteed (think the fantom is 8MB) and comes with esata bracket+cable. It's also quite a bit smaller than most 3.5" externals. No reviews though...
Stop obsessing over the performance of an external drive. It's an external drive. It wont be very fast. Go eSata and be happy.
