Knife, knife baby!
I recently purchased complete Berti kitchen and carving knife set and am pleased so far. The set came in a nice box for storage and stores nicely out of the way when not being used. The handles could be a little more comfortable though.
My fiancee' and I purchased this product for our first apartment and we didn't have a huge budget. The set was pretty decent. It says dishwasher safe although I wouldn't recommend it because the first time he put them in the dishwasher they rusted? Ive never had this happen before. But great product overall.
This was the review on the Walmart website. They rusted in the dishwasher. Is that true?
Yes, cheap knives can rust.
Actually, the very cheapest knives (the ones that won't hold an edge even long enough to slice a whole pencil) are pretty rust-resistant.
It's the mid-grade cheap knives that don't like to be left in water, and especially not in a dishwasher where the detergent typically has some bleach or bleach-like agent in it.
Basically, any and all knifes besides basic silverware shouldn't be put in the dishwasher. What happens in a dishwasher is fairly irrelevant. Use it, wipe or wash it, and towel dry reasonably soon. Leaving a knife sitting around till the *dirt* on it is so crusty that it can't quickly be wiped off is just asking for extra effort at the very least.
Don't get me wrong, Farberware knives are crap for sure, but putting it in context so are most knives at less than $200 a set. One of the things I was disappointed about with a Farberware Santoku knife that I got with a set ben recently advertised for $30 AR, was that instead of being thick enough to have scalloped out areas in the side to keep food from sticking, they just used a cheap stamped design with serrations which is kinda the opposite of the purpose of a santoku. Even so I can't complain for the price, and it's the same with this set that if you pay $20 for a 23 piece set you get to use a $1 knife a few times, maybe a great deal if you believe in disposible cookware instead of washing things.
