because...once you realize playing a real guitar is nothing like playing a wii guitar, chances are you're going to get frustrated with it and need to sell it. a squier guitar is a much higher quality instrument than this starcaster, and the squier will retain a much higher resale value. You can pickup a used (mint) squier on CL for <= to this one here.
Yea, if you want something for a 8 year to surprise at Christmas or B-day this is it. Basically to play around, noise, and have a few lessons it would be fine but the an acoustic is really a better starting point.
Now for a pre-teen or above who has a real drive to learn and take lesson the Squier Affinity Strat with Frontman 15G reverb amp is a better place to buy into, though I'd say check craiglist as there will be a couple nice Squire kits all the time for like $140 http://www.zzounds.com/item--SQU301605
Recommend you go Fender Squire rather than Starcaster.
And why would I trust your recommendation precisely?

#2, no reason. But why listen to anyone on the internet? You need references or something?
#3 better detailed my recommendation, but maybe he's shady too?
How about because it sounds like a warped board with cat gut from the Hill Billy Jamboree but that s' just me, Keiff.
