Blockbuster.com has their online rental service $10 for your first month, then $17.99 per month. You get four free in-store rentals (games excluded), unlimited online rentals with free shipping, no return dates or late fees.

They now have an added incentive: You can return your online DVDs to a store and immediately receive a free in-store rental in exchange. They will also count that online DVD as having been returned, and proceed to ship the next DVD in your queue.

If you are renewing your account you get a free 2-week trial. So, six weeks for $17.99!

I think Ben has it wrong.

You now get one E-coupon and it can be used for movie or game.

Online rental exchanges are for movies only.

Still this deal will Kill netflix. Netflix can't compete with the convenience or the # of movies. In addition the one free game rental a month is nice. You can easily keep for two weeks before getting charged.

The ability to return movies in store is awesome. No more waiting for your new movie. I agree with #2, this deal will prevent people from signing up with netflix. However, I don't see Netflix dying quite yet.

You CAN get a GAME with the coupon now, they changed the rules about a month ago so you can get games with them now, it even says it on the printed coupon.

This new in store return policy will be deadly to Netflix. Unless you don't live near a Blockbuster, I can't imagine why anyone would use Netflix anymore.

I used to be with Netflix but changed to Blockbuster 10 months ago. Blockbuster is so much better than Netflix. Returning your movies to a store and picking up another free movie is great. There seems to be a one or two day lag between returning the movie to the store and having it show up as returned in your queue.

my experience is Blockbuster takes about 2-3 times longer than Netflix to get movies from. Their stores have horrid selection of videos, so i wouldn't even bother with the hassle of setting up an account at the store.... just a waste of time trying to find something worth watching. somehow i've had 4 months of free trials from BB, and they're horrid, so slow, ship things in no priority, I get things from the bottom of my queue when many others at the top say "available"
I can't see how anyone would pay for this. Granted i haven't tried Netflix in awhile, but BB is a joke.

As far as local BB stores go it's hit and miss. If your local BB is well run it's a pleasure to deal with them. If not, it will be a nightmare. I've used many different Blockbuster stores over the years. The one I go to currently is pretty good.

There was one years back though that used to piss me off regularly. One time I was looking for a certain movie. Every time I went there it was checked out. After checking in day after day and the movie never being there I asked the guy behind the counter about it. He said that movie was stolen months ago and was their only copy. They did not plan on getting another copy of it. Here's the kicker: he left the box on the shelf so it looked like the movie was just checked out!!! After that experience I swore off Blockbuster for years. I only hard workerto them a few years ago when they came out with the unlimited rentals for a monthly fee (movie pass).

I don't know, because I never used either service, but I've heard from friends that Blockbuster simply can't compete with the movie selection offered by Netflix. For one thing, Netflix isn't trying to be a "family" company, so they can carry movies that Blockbuster would consider too risque. I guess that's the main advantage... Does anyone know the overall title count for each for comparison?

The online selection at BB is much better than the in-store selection. When I return the three movies to the store I get three free rentals, and my returns show up next day when they mail my new ones which I get in 2 days. Double the number of movies I can get with netflix. Used netflix when they started and they were good, but then they did not grow quickly enough to keep up with demand so quit after 5 months or so. USed to hate BB but this new deal is pretty good, until they stop allowing the free rentals with the returns.

I'm in the 1 month free part with BB and think it's great! The in store exchange and 1 game per month is a nice bonus if you use it. Turn around and selection are better with NF from what I have read, never had the service. When my free trial is up I will probably go with the one unlimited movie out for $10 a month. With in store exchanges that should be at least 3 a week. As much time as I can afford to devote to the tube. I'm not saying NF is bad and am likely to try it in the future.

BB is fine if you rent mostly new releases but NF has better selection. Also, NF tends to be faster at returning movies than blockbuster (more processeing centers perhaps). This new BB deal does help them out but NF is looking to launch a download on demand service a la Starz, CinemaNow, and Movielink. Competition is great as hopefully we'll see better prices and selections in the future.

If I wanted to go to the burp store and deal with the bacon challenged staff whose busy eating their own boogers and playing burp grab ass behind the counter, I WOULDN'T HAVE SIGNED UP FOR THIS burp SERVICE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Take your burp in store return bullshit and get rid of it, then drop the price by $10, cause this baconnaise is overpriced. burp all this baconnaise, the future is downloading movies, actually that's not even the future, that's the NOW. You should be downloading your movies baconeer. Eliminate round pieces of plastic with digital information on them from your life. burp it all.

Lets compare. NF = $18/month for 3 out. They send me 3 and then as they RECEIVE each one back after I mail it to them they send me another.

BB = $18/month for 3 out. They send me 3 in the mail. I take each one to BB and I immediately get another movie from the store. They also consider it returned, so they mail me another immediately. Therefore I actually have 6 out or maybe 9 if consider that the online service hasn't actually recieved my movies back.
In addition the one free GAME or Movie rental is ICING on the cake.

Maybe NF has better selection, but it can't compete on the ease of use.

as for the horndoggy, you must have problems. Most stores have crappy staff. That is what you get for $8/hr in most places. Yo

Others may want to consider a different BB location. I must drive near at least 3 between my home and my work that I could choose from. Memberships are free after all.

Returning movies to a store is a pain unless you live really close to one. That's the only reason I got rid of my previous Hollywood Video membership and went to Netflix.
