    Arcserve has to be the worst backup software available. I can't believe CA is still selling it. If you haven't yet tried Symantec Veritas Backup Exec or Symantec NetBackup (for larger infrastructures), then you don't know what you're missing.

    CA products in general are lackluster, but my experience with Arcserve is that it's slow, unreliable, and requires frequent patching to fix all of its bugs. I saw three Arcserve installs for small infractuctures (less than 10 servers) *never* run right, even with support from CA, even after they were in place for over a year.

    Yes, tape backups require a lot of hand holding because the data you're backing up typically changes from day to day, but Arcserve is a waste of time. Free Arcserve? You get what you pay for.
