MagicJack.com is offering a 30-day free trial of their Phone Service for filling out your name, address, email and your credit card number. Just cancel within the 30-day trial if you don't want to continue their service. Annoying video after the click-through.

For those with VOIP and have service interruptions this is a greatback up. Of course a cell phone could do the trick as well.

No, it comes with a Slapchop but you have to beat a ho to get both.

Had one of these for a while last year. It was "ok" at best. I asked for a Portland phone number, and it gave me one from Rhodadendron (technically still a local call to Portland, but perhaps 50 minutes drive East). The sound quality was tinny, and there were occassional latency issues.

I have this. I don't make landline calls occasionally and this is much, much cheaper than Vonage, so whatever. Works for me.

What was nice for a while was being able to use an unlocked SIP voice device to enter your Magicjack credentials in. I then didn't even need the stupid little USB magicjack. I simply plugged my SIP device in to my router and I was connected. They closed this hole recently, but I expect it to open up again somehow as soon as someone figures it out. http://www.magicjackhacks.com

No, what a scam, they charge you right away for the 30 day "eval", I canceled as soon as I checked with my bank that the charge was done. Can you say Ponzi scheme?

nah, only charge if you're using a debit - it tells you bother to read. just use cc. haven't had any problems with it and sure beats $24 a mth for local phone. not sure why this is on here though, it's always been 30 free day trial.

When my "free" faxing service suddenly jumped to $130/year, I just picked up one of these dumb dongles and the few times I need a landline to receive or send a fax I have one.

Cost: $40/ first year (including dongle)
    After that, $20/year

Good for those traveling or working internationally - gives you a US local number with a standard telephone. Software's pretty invasive though. I just took an old garbage laptop and let it serve as the host.

#8, you saw a pending charge, which is how an "authorization-only" transaction will look. The charge is not submitted for settlement, but instead is used only to make sure your card is good. It drops off your account after a couple days.

I write e-commerce APIs and see people freak out about this stuff all the time.

The "Magic Jack" types save you very little money over a cell phone (or even a landline) once you factor in the cost of electricity to keep your PC up and running 24/7. Some PCs will consume $30 of electricity per month.

Since you're a self-described software developer I'll forgive your ignorance of hardware. Wink

Yes, "some" PCs will consume $30 of electricity per month, just as "some" cars struggle to get 8mpg.

Suggesting that as a common usage scenario though is insane.

A basic semi-modern computer that sits idle most of the time (precisely the type you'd find in a home considering a "magic jack") would struggle to consume 150W on average. We'll use that though as a high estimate. Now let's also assume they have a 17" CRT monitor that they leave on 24x7 with no power saving features enabled. That's another ~80W. So our totally inefficient computer consumes 230 watts, 24 hours a day.

Let's also say you're "lucky" enough to live in CA or somewhere else with high energy costs and you pay ~14 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity.

    230 watts x 24 hours x 30 days = 165,600 watt hours, or 165.6 kilowatt hours.

    165.6 x 0.14 = $23.18 per month.

An example with more realistic numbers, basic power saving settings, and an LCD monitor would cut that in half or more.

I have one and it works pretty well, only when no one else is using the internet while a call is being made. Skips a bit when someone is.

#14: you aren't tied to your computer. You can plug all your normal house phones into this, and use it as you'd normally use a landline.

#15: what speed internet connection do you have?

Use mine just to speak to relatives and friends in Latin America and the UK, they all have a MJ. My download speed is 1.64Mb/s and with an Asus notebook running at 2GHz the quality is very good. I leave the notebook on just during the day and use SpeedFan to keep it cool. The message service is useful, they just go through to your email address as a wave file. I have tried it at slower broadband speeds and voice quality can become 'choppy'. The MJ is very useful when travelling. By the way it can be found at a lower price sometimes on eBay.

You can purchase 5 years of service for $60. Great for traveling if you have internet service at the hotel. You can call home to the U. S. or Canada free. Of course, you need to bring along a laptop computer.
