    Welcome to the suck.

Move the toolbars and get rid of .doc

I had my first experience supporting someone at work when they got this preinstalled (trial) with Vista and people are going to haaaaate this. Unless you work with people that enjoy re-learning software, which, I don't so much.

It's not that much of a problem, though I have supported office for a very long time. I also don't use much beyond the basic functionality of the apps.

OpenOffice is very nice as an alternative, though there is some learning involved.

Well, I went to the site and I actually tried out Vista; it's okay, but not great.

OpenOffice is good, as long as you don't deal with Password-protected spreadsheets/documents. That would be proprietary MS encryption for that.

Wow, actually tried Vista. Kudos to you.

Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 Enterprise are on the laptop I am now using. Oooh.

OpenOffice has 1 flaw that has ruined it for me. The last version i tried could do a linear regression, but would not give you the equation of the line. There are also a few more features that office 2007 has that make it nice (like the long-overdue reference manager). I personally like the new layout, it really makes it easier to find things and get stuff done.

Office wasn't hard to learn... Vista wasn't hard to learn either...

Where's the Office 2007? All I see at the link is the OneCare crap.

I've tried Vista and Office 07, will have to start supporting them sooner or later. I don't mind either. The ribbon is interesting (though only in Word, Excel and Powerpoint (and some parts of Outlook), not in Visio or any other program yet). Frankly, I see Vista as being XP with a new skin. No better than XP, no worse either really. Not really a step up, but a step to the side.

    A resounding Meh.

Vista is slower because of it's integrated Digital Right Management functionality. It goes deep into your hardware and causes a lot of overhead.

To be fair, Vista isn't up to the expectation, however, Office 2007 is truly a great great product. Smaller file size, XML compatible, clean interface, better for IT pros to troubleshoot, the only thing is to get used to it. That's all.

Open Office is good enough for most people and screws Microsoft out of some $$$ that they would use to crush another software segment. They just put lipstick on the pig and sell it to you again. I have been putting Ubuntu that includes OO on friends and my older PC's that would choke on XP or Vista and they run well. People adapt quickly and generally don't miss Windows. Great for general computing. Doesn't work out well for gamers or people who are hooked on apps not ported to Linux though. Not a Linux expert so there may be emulators or virtual machine software that would cover more apps. Anyway I say screw Microsoft any chance you get. I did manage to get a copy of XP Home for $30 ARB recently and it qualifies for a Vista basic upgrade for $5 so I will check it out. The Vista DRM thing pisses me off though and doesn't seem to add much value over XP.
